So we had great basics to start with. But it seemed lacking in personality and charm. Here is a list of what we did:
- new appliances
- subway tile backsplash {see inspiration story below}
- new Moen faucet
- bin pulls from here
- under cabinet lighting
- glass front cabinet doors
When working with a smaller space, remember to stick to design techniques that can trick the eye. We kept the backsplash simple and consistent even behind the cooktop. This makes the counter space look longer. Also, using a reflective back splash causes more light to bounce around the room and ultimately look larger. We chose to do one glass cabinet door on either side of the kitchen to lengthen the look of the kitchen. Lastly, don’t under estimate the power of under cabinet lighting. It really transforms a kitchen and is so much more enjoyable to cook under.
story on the pink towel later . . a mommy tip!
I will forever by grateful to Janell over at Isabella & Max Rooms. When I saw her kitchen remodel, I picked up the phone immediately and ordered the same backsplash from here. The subway tile is classic but the beveled edge provides a terrific reflection of light and adds dimension to the space. I love it! And as she pointed out, Sarah from Sarah’s House used it in her farmhouse! It’s a keeper. Thanks, Janell. Here are some shots from her kitchen. It’s beautiful!
And here is an up close and personal of our backsplash One last look of our new kitchen

Beautiful!!! I have white cabinets and black counters and am struggling to take it to the next level and make it pulled together…right now it's very blah. I'm going to be studying your photos over and over as I try to get the details to come together. I would love to know what your paint color is!

Thanks so much for the info! Do you use the soap pump? Does it leak onto your granite?

Thank you so, so much for sharing your house with us! I have been trying to figure out what my "style" is, and this is EXACTLY the look I've been trying to figure out — classy, uncluttered, and fun! I absolutely love it.
One quick question — did you ever explain the pink towel? 🙂 Thanks!
Candace says
Love the kitchen! Did you take your existing cabinets somewhere to have the glass put in, or did you have some custom made?

the subway tiles are great! i love a white kitchen!

Your kitchen is beautiful! Love it all! I have a question about adding the pulls. I want to switch our knobs to pulls as well, but I'm nervous about drilling 2 new holes and what to do with the single one. Did you just leave it hidden by the pull? We have cherry cabinets, so I don't think I could fill it with wood putty and have it match?? I'm just to chicken to drill new holes, but love the classic look of the pulls.
Anne says
That looks lovely! I love those type of drawer pulls- I'm getting ready to install mine on my newly painted cabinets!

Hello.. Great job on the kitchen remodel. Everything is just beautiful. One question. What color did you use on the wall. Sorry if you posted it already. Thank you..
Joe says
Very impressive. Good call on the under the cabinet lights with the beveled subway tile. I'm redoing my kitchen now and I'd love to know where you got the coffee/espresso machine.
Trisha says
Do you remember the name of your kitchen paint color/brand? We also have a white kitchen and want to update with dark, possibly black counter tops. I'm looking for a nice, light neutral and your color looks great. Beautiful kitchen!
Courtney {a thoughtful place} says
Hi Trisha. Thank you for the nice compliment. We used Cochise by Dunn Edwards. Hope that helps. Good luck with your kitchen!
Kendall says
I know you said you inherited the cabinets and counter tops, but do you happen to know the manufacturer/style/color of either?! Getting ready to remodel, and this is exactly what we want.
Thanks.
Kristin Freeman Wood says
I would like to know the color of the cabinets as well! I have black countertops and want white cabinets, but not TOO white. Your color looks perfect!
Courtney {a thoughtful place} says
Hi Kristin and Kendall! Gosh . . I wish I could say they are some fancy cabinet . . but they are builder white. I can't find the maker listed on them anywhere. But I do know that if you a cabinet person come out, they will show you sample cards. Even if that are not pricey cabinets, you can get them in warmer whites. Hope that helps. The granite is "absolute black." Have fun with your makeovers!

Hi Courtney, I just found your blog and love your kitchen remodel. Your before photo looks exactly like mine (same exact backsplash, white appliances) and I am just waiting for my oven to die (it is 18 years old!) to replace the counter and put up white subway tile. Yours is beautiful! I love the quote on your chalkboard too. 😉

I just popped over from I Heart Organizing, and I love your kitchen! It looks like you also added moulding to the window above the sink. We have that same type of window, and I would love know how hard it was to frame it out. Did you DIY, or have a contractor do it? Also, how did you do the under cabinet lighting? Is it the pop in kind that you have to turn on individually, or is it hardwired to a light switch? Sorry for so many questions! 🙂 Your kitchen is beautiful! -Jenny

Hi there! Your site is lovely and I'm especially loving the kitchen. I just wanted to tell you that your quote in the kitchen (Get on your knees and pray, then get on your feet and work) is exactly what I needed to read. I've been feeling a bit blah lately and your little message is just the reminder I needed to keep moving and stop sulking lol.
Thanks a bunch!

i really like your kitchen. love the back splash.

Absolutely gorgeous! Can you share how you mounted your tv?
melarse says
Hi – Beautiful kitchen. As we've been planning our new kitchen both yours and Jannell have been inspiration for me. We are also doing the beveled subway tile, but are thinking about doing it in a herringbone pattern, as the kitchen is 21×9. The 21' wall is where most of the tile will show, and the rest of the wall is all glass cabinets, windows and an open hood. Do you think herringbone pattern along with the detail of the bevel is too much? Thank you much!
Jenny says
Hi Courtney,
I love your kitchen? Can you tell me about the window treatment above your kitchen sink? If you made it, can you tell me how? And if you bought it, can you tell me where? Thank you so much!

You did such a fantastic job on your kitchen. It's quite beautiful, as is the rest of your home. I have a very similar style going in our kitchen. We just bought a small tv and I was wondering how you mounted yours. Is it attached to the backsplash or the bottom of the cabinet? I have purchased a mount that swings/flips the tv down from the cabinet but the rod is too long and I have to figure out something else. Just curious…
Thanks so much!
Steph
P.S. I really enjoy your blog

Just stumbled across your blog through pinterest, Love this kitchen! We are getting ready to purchase our first house and have to remodel the small kitchen, i love the layout of this, do you happen to know the size of your kitchen?

Hi Courtney,
I am in the middle of a kitchen remodel myself and looking to do white cabinets and white subway tile just like you have done.
How did you pick your shade of white for the cabinets so that it would play nice with the shade of white on the subway tile?
Thanks 🙂

Wow! This is beautiful. I am dreaming up some similar updates for our kitchen and I can’t wait to use your pictures as inspiration.
