A New Living Room Rug: Stripes for the Win

March 10, 2014 by Courtney 41 Comments

So excited to share the new look of  our living room with you today. If you follow along on Instagram you might have seen how I literally couldn’t decide between three fabulous striped rugs. So I bought them all and tested them out in my space. While each brought out a different look to the room, I immediately fell in love with one of them. Here is the new look! fiddleleaf     stripedrugblack   I brought home a green and white rug, a gray and white stripe, and this one. While I LOVED the way each looked in the room, this one just made my heart sing. I love the energy it brings to the space and how it picks up the other black accents in the room such as the brass cornered frames, the lampshade trim and the subway art. stripedrugbluechair   Not too long ago, we had our front door painted black and it looks really nice with the new stripes as well. I have a major love affair with stripes so this really reflects my style. My husband is super excited about the new rug, too. stripedrugdoor We had the West Elm zebra rug in here before. I still really love that rug but was so ready for a change. The previous rug and how to lengthen drapes can be seen here. I even contemplated painting the whole room but when I found this rug it all came together and gave me the new feel I was craving. And are you ready for this?! The rug was  $50 find at HomeGoods. Bam. What?! I am keep the gray and white striped one too {it will make an appearance in another space shortly}. The other awesome thing about this find is that if/when it shows wear I can flip it over. It’s like two rugs for the low price of one!   rugblackandwhite ruglivingroom   rugstripes And below are a couple of grainy iPhone shots of the room. I thought they had a fun feel.  The rug is only 5 x 8. I have tried larger rugs in here and for some reason I just don’t like the feel of it. This works well in this space for us. Not too mention I really love being able to fold the rug away and swiffer and clean without lifting couch legs. This room gets a constant flow of traffic and you have to design with things like that in mind.   photo (30) photo (31) I really like the way the new bold rug brings out a pretty tone on our floors. It’s amazing how a small change can make such a big impact. Stripes for the win. What do you think? Could you go bold with stripes?

That rug looks awesome!! I love the black door too. You did the right thing by bringing home three to try rather than just guessing in the store. I love Home Goods. We have a really large one about 20 minutes from our house, and it's just amazing. I always find what I'm looking for there (plus things I was not looking for !).

Yes! Such a fan of HomeGoods. It really was fascinating to see how all three made the room look entirely different.

Thanks, Tammy. That is so sweet. I like to change things up and find that sometimes just one or two changes does the trick.

I WISH we had a HomeGoods close to us in Wisconsin – I've heard that they are killing it this season with awesome affordable rugs and decor! I really love the strips – it reminds me of a rug we almost bought from Ikea, but we opted to go with a smaller rug too for the same reasons you outlined in your post. The rug definitely brings a whole new vibe to your living room – fabulous!

Oh I LOOOOVE it!! And so funny, I was just looking at your house tour photos the other day and remembered that you wanted to change the rug {a while ago!}. This is really so perfect…you used to have the Ikea blanket in there, right? Totally makes sense that this would be the winner. 🙂

I bought two of this same rug (at TJ Maxx). I got both the gray & white and navy & white to try out and ended up keeping the gray. Yours looks great! I'm wondering, though, what time of rug pad you use? I'm having a hard time keep my rug from moving (even on my carpet)!

We recently bought two indoor/outdoor rugs from Pottery Barn that are reversible like your new one. Question for you. Did you put a rug pad underneath? With two boys and two dogs, I am finding that ours moves a lot and then looks wrinkled. Any advice?

Thank you for sharing! I love the black and white rug! Everyone keeps telling me I have to buy a rug that is 10 x 13 for my space, but I am having a very difficult time finding one I like. This gives me the confidence to do whatever I want. Thanks!

I just bought the same rug in gray at TJMaxx (cost me $10 – since I'd saved up 40 in reward dollars) 🙂

So…last year when redoing our living room, I scoured the net looking for inspiration. When I saw your living room, that was it!!! My husband said you'd think I was some crazy stalker if you saw I was trying to duplicate it, but you know how you can't help but make things your own even if someone inspires you. Want to see pictures? If you go to http://www.catherineamissphotography.com and click on "Client Proofing" after entering the site, you can type in "living room" to see some I took last summer. I SO not trying to plug my business site; it was just the only way I could think to share pics without having to download them.

It looks so great! But, honestly, all I can focus on right now is $50…what?!?! I have a black and white striped runner between my girls' rooms upstairs and you can bet I'll now be hunting for this for the bigger part of our upstairs hallway!

Hi Courtney – any ideas you have on how I can spray paint my garden stool that same color green? I looked on Overstock's website and they are calling the color "spring green", but I was curious if you knew of a spray paint color I could try and get a similar color in the end?
