So I am a bit emotional today. Putting together this post was a tear jerker. My first grader is growing faster than I can handle. She is such a bight light in this house and she has come to realize that she is no longer crazy about her very pink room. I get it. But boy is it hard to say goodbye to this room. If you have been around for a while you know that I am pretty darn sentimental and each room in this house seems to tell a story. This room has told the story of a sweet little girl who is rapidly finding her own voice, courageously trying new things, passionately devouring books, and whole heartedly embracing the artist in herself. Her room, her safe haven, should reflect that. But I can’t help but look back at this pale pink room and remember the toddler who couldn’t wait to paint everything pink! This pink room was a labor of love. From her little swimsuit on the wall to the custom drapes and duvet, I spent some serious sweat equity in here. The headboard was from her crib which you can read about here. The wall color is so pale and pretty that you just want to eat it up {just enough pink by dunn edwards}. This sweet table, painted by my dad for the first granddaughter in the family, is being passed down to little brother. I have my dad’s blessing to repaint it and my four year old thinks it’s super cool that he gets his own table. {photos by jylare smith} So it’s time to allow this room to grow up right along with my daughter. She is a huge lover of art and she fell in love with this print from Minted created by Kelli Hall. I did, too. I have let this set the tone for her entire room and it’s been so fun bringing it all together. The print just makes you smile and it perfectly reflects Riley’s smile and dynamic personality. highway flowers – kelli hall We are re-arranging the furniture so she has more room to make a mess, painting the walls white and going tangerine on the ceiling! The overall feel of the room is a blank canvas with bright bold colors infused here and there. She will also gain a desk area so she has a nice place to work on her artwork. We have a great deal planned for the room. Right now it’s a disaster. Complete disaster. We’ve started moving furniture and I will paint the walls this weekend. It always gets so much worse before it gets better, right?! But Riley’s excitement is infectious and it’s been really fun working on this space together. My little girl is growing up and so is her room. I feel blessed to be along for the ride. have a great day

Can't wait to see this! Sophisticated for little miss. 🙂

Love how you worked off that print. Such cheerful and lovely colors. Still girly but not babyish and very sophisticated. Can't wait to see the orange ceiling!

I can't to see how the room turns out. Love the colors! We redecorated both our girls' rooms when they turned seven. It was fun to see their style preferences. For both girls, we chose the bed covering first and then designed the room from there.

My little girl is only 15 months old, and I dread the day she wants to change her "birdie and owl" nursery that I lovingly created for her while I was pregnant. I know the day will come when she thinks it's too baby-ish. I feel your pain! On the other hand, your plan for her new room looks FANTASTIC! Can't wait to see it come together! 🙂 I recently found your blog and just love it, very inspiring! 🙂 – April Hoff

Her room is darling and it must be bittersweet to have her want it changed. But, it is also exciting and a great bonding time to create a new room together! That girl has great style!

Love that print. I always love hearing the details of what inspired a room design. That bedding is so fun! Can't wait to see it all come together!

I am excited to see how this plays out. I am sure it will be beautiful!

I LOVE the plan, and I know you both are going to enjoy making it over.
My son is 25 months, and I look forward to soon switching his nursery to a big boy room.
Where did you get the throw? I've seen it online before, but I cannot find out where it is from.

Love this. I put my heart and soul into my only daughter Stella's room and know some day she will want a change. She tries to add her own touches by hanging her jewelry, stickers and old valentines on the walls which I have to stop myself from taking down and remember that maybe she gets this need to personalize from me!! So then I have to embrace the creativity, right?!
The new ideas are so cute. Can't wait to see how they turn out

I'm fully charmed by your mood board! I can't wait to see the finished product and I know Riley will be so proud to have worked on it with you. As painful as it is to realize they are growing up, try to savor every moment of this process with her. She is creative, independent, intelligent and curious all because of you (and Ryan of course!) and it will show in her new space. xoxo

The original room is too cute, however how fun it will be to recreate your daughter's room.
Enjoy the experience, Liz

I actually have always loved that room- so I can't imagine how you feel!! Ha! I too have a sweet girl who is brimming with ideas about everything all the time – she is in 2nd Grade. She has a pink and purple room but it's only about a year old. Hopefully she won't want to change it any time soon – but I know at one point we will have to arrange a different room!
My 2 year old son is actually outgrowing his crib now so this is going to facilitate a lot of changes in the family's upper level! Switching dressers and beds around for 3 growing kids. It is a little sad – I prefer denial!

Ahhh, the best kind of client : ) Geez, I get sentimental when H outgrows a onesie… I can't imagine outgrowing a room! Definitely a special time!! Can't wait to see it come together.

great ideas…. my oldest daughter loves orange… I never thought of painting the ceiling a color and leaving the walls neutral… great idea. We will be working on her room later this year in our new home and I wanted to know where you found the bedding since those are her favorite colors… it seems more grown up and not to cutesy as she will be 9. Perfect.

I fell in love with Riley's darling pink room awhile back when you had posted it. That really is the prettiest pink. Her new room will be just as pretty! Love The Highway Flowers print….fabulous mix of colors. The tangerine on the ceiling is going to be fun! Can't wait to see it after you and your little mini designer are finished! So cute that Riley is helping out.

Such a sweet pink room. I can see why you would be sad to change it. But the new plan looks adorable. Looking forward to seeing it.

What a beautiful big girl room! Bright, cheery, girly, and chic– everything a girl's room should be! My older son will soon outgrow his baby room, and I know I will feel sad to see it go, though it is amazing to see who he is becoming as he grows up. Thanks for giving us a look back and a look forward today. Happy Wednesday!

I cannot believe the timing of this post! My new client (a 7 year old girl) claims to be completely over pink too! She wants to go turquoise of all things. They will come back around won't they ;)? Seriously, this plan is perfect in every way – can't wait to see it come to life!

Awww this is such a sweet post and tribute to your daughter! I still remember my childhood room…it represents so many things for us growing up…it's our safe haven {like you said!}. So excited to see the room come together! Riley is lucky to have such a talented mama!!

awwww that is bittersweet! they grow up so fast!
LOVE LOVE her pink room but Im sure you both will come up with something amazing!

Love the new design plan. It will definitely allow her to grow with it. My brother laughs at us all the time…he said our rooms (especially the girls) have probably shrunk a few inches since we moved in 20 years ago due to all the paint color changes!! Katie and I are currently working up plans for her new room for when she returns to school in the fall. She is thrilled to have her own room at school with a clean slate (freshly painted cream colored walls).

aww, that can make you teary eyed for sure! My girl is 3 and looooooves pink!

The original room is so pretty! I recently discovered your blog and I am enjoying reading it. I love your 'writing on the wall' post and my husband likes the idea too. I have to hurry and buy my marker and get it done before he changes his mind! ;)Best of luck with the room redo!
