I am doing the happy dance over here. Do you remember when I accidently blamed my five year old son for stuffing wet towels in their bathroom cabinet. Not my proudest moment. I really did think he had stuffed a towel under the sink. But I kept pulling out wet towel after wet towel. Drenched and heavy. . . all signs pointed to a crazy leak. You can read more about that here. It’s actually written as a take on a classic children’s tale! Alas, it has been a while. A long while. My poor kids are still living with a torn up bathroom. I have stuck up a makeshift fabric skirt around the sink just so they don’t have to look at the bare concrete floor and pipes. To which my son has said, “Oh mom. Just leave the fabric. It looks good.” I can only imagine the look of horror from the people walking through our home when we go to sell! So it’s time, my friends. It’s time to get a bathroom underway. My friends and family know I have been dragging my feet. But it was all because I didn’t have a good picture in my mind of what I wanted. Until I opened this months’ Living Magazine. Ta-da: Photo by Eric Piasecki. Courtesy of Martha Stewart Living. Copyright © 2014 And if you are thinking, “Hey. That’s a kitchen,” you would be right. But that doesn’t mean I can alter this baby to become our children’s bathroom. I just love the gray, the gold, and the white. It’s lovely. I really really love it. So the scheming has begun! I plan to go with unfinished cabinets that I can paint myself. Have never been afraid of a good paint project and I just adore the gray cabinets. I have my eyes on two colors right now but will see how they both look when I get samples. … To warm things up, I am going with the brass hardware. I am swooning over it and think it adds a nice richness to the cooler palette of gray and white. cabinet pull matchbox catch … Next up is the subway tile! While we don’t plan to rip out the shower or tile the bathroom, I do plan to run tile up the entire wall behind the sink. Why not?! I think it will be a really fun effect and a pretty round mirror will be mounted on top of the tile. I actually have some tile left over from our kitchen makeover and I plan to see if it’s enough. via chez larsson subway tile {used in my kitchen} While mine has been discontinued, I have seen many that look just like it. These come in sheets to make the installation easier. Calling my name! If you prefer the non-beveled subway tile you can find those here. … Of course I am skirting the issue of the countertop! I want Carrera Marble in the worst way but know it’s not smart for a children’s bathroom. Or is it?! Anyone out there have experience with that? No matter what, I plan to go white or white with some gray. I love the clean, classic look. If you have any opinions on the counters or have recently upgraded to something you love, please share. I am all ears. I have a plan, people! This is so exciting. While many details still need to be ironed out, the vision is coming to life. S L O W L Y but surely!

I love the subway tile and gray cabinets! While I'm usually a fan of nickel knobs, the gold really look cool. They are so in right now and even if that changes, hardware is such an easy switch!

LOVE Carrera marble, but as porous as it is, if something sat on it for a while, I would be scared that you would never get it out. There are some types of granite that give you a similar look. Looking forward to seeing your progress! (We're currently building a house, so I've spent LOTS of time looking at granite and marble) 🙂

Gorgeous, Courtney!! I LOVE the gray and gold combo, and used that exact photo for inspiration for my client yesterday, she's not doing a kitchen or bath, but built-in shelving, we were wishing she had more than 3 drawers because we love the cups pulls so much! Chelsea gray was one of our samples, too! 🙂

Great idea to take this kitchen look into the bathroom! And now that you've invited the ol' marble debate, I'll share that we have carrara marble counters in our family bathroom, which is used by two adults, a three year old girl that loves to sneak in and play with things like hairspray and vaseline, and a five year old boy that spits toothpaste both in the sink and on the counters. We've lived with our marble counters for going on two years and I LOVE THEM! We are really happy with them in the bathroom and they look great. If I stare hard in certain lights I can see some marks (sort of what look like a very light water stain) but I have to be searching hard for it and even with it there, it doesn't bother me. We haven't regretted our counters once. The only change to our regular habits after putting in those counters is to use a tray to hold our soap (just in case soap would drip down and sit unnoticed) and stopping using lemon soap (because lemon etches more than most things). If you love it, go for it! I'm looking forward to seeing how the bathroom turns out!

That is going to be fantastic! I adore the carrara marble and white subway tile combo. It is so crips, clean and classy. And as far as carrara marble goes, I say jump on the crazy train with me girl…because not only did I use it in our guest bathroom (soon-to-be kiddos bathroom), but I also used it in my laundry room. I am a wild one I tell ya! You can see them here: http://renovationrehab.blogspot.com/2014/01/vintage-bathroom-makeover-part-4.html
I love the way it looks and have found a marble cleaner and sealer all in one….which we use on a weekly basis. But when I made the decision to use carrara countertops in the bathroom and laundry room, I accepted the fact that they might not always looks brand new, and I am okay with that. And to mix things up in the bathroom (since a tub surround in subway tiles can be a bit boring) I added a fun "framed" herringbone feature on one of the walls. You can see it here {http://renovationrehab.blogspot.com/2013/07/vintage-bathroom-remodel-part-3.html}

When we bought our house it was still being built so we had some options when it came to finishes but we didn't have the extra money to upgrade them. One of the best decisions that I made without even trying was to put a blue speckled laminate in the kids bathroom. It hides so many toothpaste splatters and general messiness! Blue won't work in this case but I would definitely lean towards a quartz that is mostly white with some gray and even some sparkle. You can even get it with Microban to cut down on the germs. This would give you the white look without the worry that the kids would do something to it! You're only a few years away from hair dye and nail polish!

Hi! When we updated our main bathroom, I wanted and chose Carrara marble. I was worried about spills and stains so I purchased several single marble tiles – similar to this: http://www.homedepot.com/p/MS-International-Greecian-White-12-in-x-12-in-Honed-Marble-Floor-Wall-Tile-TARACAR1212H/202508328# and put small furniture floor pads underneath each of the four corners. This bathroom has two sinks with a space in between them – so I placed the tile in between the two sinks. The single tile ended up matching the counter perfectly and acts as a "tray" for our tooth brushes, hand soap etc. I then place something I think that might stain on the single tile and figure once that one gets used and abused I would just replace it with another $5 tile. So far the rest of the countertop has held up well. You could also use a tray to catch these items, but I think the tile blends perfectly and keeps the same look. I say go for the carrara – I think you will be happy! Just make sure to not use nail polish remover near it and clean with stone cleaner (I use Methods) and you should be all set!

Love the look. I personally would not go with the marble. I have the worst OCD and I know once it is in…It is in and all the etches (If they were to happen) would drive me crazy. I am in love with the gray and subway tiles. I think putting subway tiles up the wall is a brilliant idea. It would make for an easy clean up. I am a fan of the nickel pulls myself with the gray, but the brass is pretty. It doesn't seem that long ago that everyone was on the band wagon spray painting all of their brass hardware. Now it seems to be making a comeback again. I can't wait to see the finished product.

Love the gold with grey! We had marble counters in our master bath in the old house and it had water marks all over it. It didn't really bother me in there – I actually it would harder to keep nice in the kitchen!

I can see this as a wonderful kitchen redo! I love the color choices! My daughter just did the subway tile in her kitchen and she loves it!

oh this is going to be good!!! We installed marble in a clients powder bath and she loves it, but again its a powder bath not a kiddos bath. We are sourcing quartzite for a clients kitchen which is a great natural stone alternative to marble. The other option is engineered quartz (Silestone & Cesarstone) my favorite is the misty carrera in a honed finish. Good luck and I cant wait to see what you choose!!

What about quartz or Zodiac instead of the marble? There are some beautiful pieces out there that look like marble but would hold up well in the bathroom. Ceaserstone and Silestone are also good options as well!

We are renovating our master bath and used Ben Moore's Rockport Gray on the cabinets with Delicatus White granite instead of marble–really happy with it (although one can never go wrong with marble, we just needed a cheaper alternative in the white/gray family). Can't wait to see your finished room!

Hi Courtney,
Love the idea!!! I think brass is really stealing the spotlight right now. 🙂
If you want an alternative to marble (which I was crazy enough to put in my: kitchen and main bath as well as bathroom floors, go with a quartzite – it can be a bit on the pricier end but it looks almost identical to marble. We chose it in our master bath and had I know how much it looks like marble I may have swayed everywhere. This is what it looks like:
