Can you believe we actually have a bathroom reveal to show you? Those of you that have been around for a while know that my children’s bathroom flooded and we were forced to rip it apart. And as any blogger or home enthusiast knows . . . that’s code for, “Oh, sweet! We need a new bathroom!” And so the renovation began. We decided to do the entire space ourselves and let me tell you, it was way more than we ever dreamed. It took much longer than we thought and it was quite the learning curve {especially tiling the floor}. But the outcome far exceeded our expectations and our children now have a nicer bathroom than we do. Hmm. Might have to rectify that one. Are you listening, honey?! So without further ado, welcome to the newly renovated kids’ bathroom.
When we set out to renovate the bathroom I knew I wanted something timeless, classic and clean. I wanted it to be breath of fresh air and to be very spa like. This doubles as our bathroom for guests when they visit so I knew I wanted a really serene space. And with keeping the overall color scheme gray and white, I can infuse any pop of color with a new set of towels or rug at any time. Or even just a bright bouquet of flowers.
Because it is a rather small space, I wanted the details to shine. We ripped out the original mirror and tiled the wall with marble. While much of it is covered with the new pretty mirror, I think the overall look is much more interesting and pretty. It’s hard to really appreciate how far this bathroom came unless you see the before shots.
Yep! These photos make me cringe, too! Ha. So the fabric was because we had ripped out the cabinet and I didn’t want the kids staring at the pipes for months while we planned the renovation. I never snapped a photo before we started ripping up tile. But it’s safe to say this bad boy was in rough shape!
I fell in love with the faucet and had to have it. It did not come with the hot/cold buttons but the salesperson I worked with was amazing and hooked me up by switching them out for me. I mention that in case you find yourself in the same position and want those sweet little buttons.
We used porcelain tile for the floor and have been really happy with it so far. In fact, the entire bathroom still looks perfect so things are holding up. I know I will get asked, so let’s chat marble countertop, shall we. Here is the deal. As you saw from the before photo, it was a larger than average vanity but with only one sink. Most one sink vanities are pretty small. When I found this one . . . and it was the exact measurements I was blown away. It came with the marble top. Is it a perfect choice for a children’s bathroom. Probably not. But I LOVE it and would do it again. No marks or stains thus far and we have lived with the bathroom for a few months now. The children do know that the bathroom is for brushing teeth, doing hair, showering, etc. The nail polish has been relocated! Let’s be real.
I wanted to infuse a bit of brass for warmth but did not want to go overboard. I love mixing metals and think it adds even more dimension to a space. The School House Electric Co. light was a splurge and I am rather obsessed with the hand painted shades. I mean, really. It’s the jewelry in the space and well worth the splurge. I painted the artwork above the towel hooks and chose to keep it super clean and simple. The artwork below is from Lucy from Craftberry Bush. It has such significance to us. It reads, “Do what you love.” We wholeheartedly believe that over here and she has been so supportive of my daughter’s art talent. I just love having this print in their bathroom. Really special. I taped off the frame and sprayed the gold corners myself.
We took down the old towel bar and replaced it with two hooks. Wow is the bathroom cleaner with hooks! The children actually hang their towel up each time. Miracle. We also added a small towel bar next to the sink. It holds a hand towel for the children but will hold a bath towel when guests are here.
We removed the medicine cabinet. It used to be where the “Do what you love” art print is. It just looked off there and we never kept anything in it. With eight drawers and space underneath, the vanity holds more than enough. In fact there are four empty drawers right now. I love that! I couldn’t decide on a window treatment but when I found the wool plaid fabric I fell in love. Done. I made the window treatment myself.
We really are so so thrilled with how this space turned out. It was a labor of love. My husband truly deserves all of the credit. He is so so talented. Between tiling the floor, laying new baseboards, tiling the wall and installing the toilet and faucet, the man can do it all. Oh, he also hung everything. I did a really great job of directing! And a big thank you to all of you for all of your encouragement and support throughout this project.

Beautiful space! Our kids' bathroom was the first room we tackled when we moved into our house a year ago. So far all we have managed to achieve is to paint it (white! So not very exciting without accessories!) We have done loads in other rooms but we really need to finish that bathroom! You are now my motivation!
I am struggling with storage options as we only have a pedestal sink, no vanity. Shelves are great but we need something within the girls' reach where they can store their toothbrushes etc. (they're only 4 and 2) Any ideas?
Again, your bathroom turned out beautiful. Really inspiring.
Courtney {a thoughtful place} says
Thanks, so much. Can you mount baskets on the wall? Carmel, from Our Fifth House did something like that and they are fantastic!

Absolutely love! We are thinking of doing that wood-look tile in our living room. Do you happen to know which color grout you used? I've seen debates online as to while color looks best with the wood-look tiles. Thank you!
Courtney {a thoughtful place} says
Ugh. Really good question. I would have to look and see. I know it's dark.. . possibly espresso. Will double check.

I am so impressed that you did this all yourselves. It looks beautiful.
I'm glad to hear that you like the porcelain wood tiles. I am considering them for my downstairs powder room and adjacent entry hall. I am not brave enough to do it myself but, like you, I am good at directing.
Courtney {a thoughtful place} says
See . . we direct well! Ha. Yes. . . very happy with the tile and love the contrast.

You did a beautiful job, your kids are very lucky. One of the many details that appeals to me personally is how you mixed the metals. I fell in love with the Jonathan Alder Parker High brass wall sconce and bought 2 for my bath reno. I was going to go with all brass fixtures but my plumber said they were not recommended when you live by the ocean, which we do. Tying the brass sconce in with brass detail on your artwork was brilliant.
I also love the contrast created with the floor tile. I was drawn to the same tile but was hesitant because the rest of the floors in my house are a white washed hardwood. Are your floors outside the bathroom dark?
Amy@eatsleepdecorate says
Can this bathroom be any more gorgeous!? Nope. What an amazing job you and hubby did. When John and I tiled a back splash together…we almost got divorced! Ha! So glad everything turned out okay for you. 🙂 I love all of the little details you put into this bathroom. That framed out tile behind the mirror is genius. I can't wait to come visit and use this bathroom. I may never leave.

Do you know where the salesperson found the hot/cold faucet buttons, or how to order them? I recently moved into a new house with side-by-side bathroom sinks. One of the “hot” index buttons is missing. I’ve been to half-a-dozen plumbing stores to find a replacement. I saw your blog, and you have faucet buttons with the same font/script! I would greatly appreciate your help.

Hi, I am thinking of using the same vanity in my bathroom, can you tell me how well yours is holding up with kids and water etc., we like the look if it but wish the sides werent MDF.
Thanks!
Cary says
I own the vanity and I wish I had not purchased it. The marble isn’t sealed so it will stain ( I had a marble guy stain it when my kitchen counter was installed, it didn’t help). The cabinets attract dirty easy and chip.
Courtney says
Oh what a bummer. Yes! It does stain. 100% I did a whole post about that here https://athoughtfulplaceblog.com/marble-vs-quartz/ But so far ( about a year) we haven’t had any chips and I just swiffer the cabinet each week when I clean their bathroom. So far so good.
bonnie rosenthal says
Hi! I love the bathroom vanities! I was curious how they have held up for you? Thanks!
Lori says
Hi Courtney. The bathroom looks absolutely amazing. I love the sconces and showed them to my hubby and he wondered if the sconces reflect line shadows with the light. A detail I had never thought about because I just thought they were so pretty.
gary says
What are the color on the walls, pale oak? and the ceiling?
DeAnna says
I love the Pale Oak, and also wondering what ceiling color was used. Painter is coming today!
Courtney says
I’m so sorry. I don’t know. We never repainted the ceilings. But we have use a color called white shadow. Good luck!

Just found your lovely bathroom remodel. Absolutely beautiful in every way! Could you please update who makes the towel bar and hooks? Love them!
