I can’t take it anymore. My dining room chairs need a new lease on life. While the drop cloth fabric worked well for us for a couple of years, it is time to save my sanity and move towards outdoor fabric. There are so many choices out there. I wanted to share with you part of my shopping process and also let you know about a great sale going on right now. So here is the back story. In October of 2011, I recovered our dining room chairs with drop cloth fabric from the hardware store. We also added fun brass pulls to the backs. I have loved these chairs. Two out of the four still look great. Can you guess whose chairs don’t!? Here is the deal. I love to have nice things and for the house to look pulled together. I do not, however, like to play house police. We have always lived in a home where my kids can roll around all over the furniture, enjoy themselves, and not be told no with big ticket items. That is not to say they haven’t learned to leave lovely breakable things alone, because they certainly have. But I don’t want to have to worry about the day to day things. So for these chairs, I need to move on and employ some durable and stain resistant fabric. It’s outdoor fabric time, my friends. {dining room and whole house tour here} Not fun to look at. I know. But trying to keep it real. They just look nasty. Well, two of them do!!! I just don’t want guests wondering what they are sitting on when they visit for dinner! Time for change! ………… I made a trip to JoAnn’s today and picked up one of my favorite samples of outdoor fabric. I am always looking for one that feels nice to the touch and not super stiff like so many. I am really please with the texture of this fabric. It is not stiff and unforgiving like so many outdoor fabrics can be. Good outdoor fabric can be pricey. If you wait for a good sale it puts it at a nice price point. Right now, all designer fabrics are on sale at JoAnn’s. They are all 50% off. That is an awesome deal so go check it out if you are in need of something. You can check out these sample books for about $25. When you return them, they refund your money. It’s always nice to bring home the colors and see what they look like in your own home. … I chose the Pitta Cool Grey. It actually is very close to the drop cloth color and that has been great for us. I love to keep my table and chairs neutral as I love to entertain and go crazy with color on our table. In fact, I have a fun table to show you tomorrow. So that is the plan my friends. And because JoAnn’s is having such a great sale, I am planning to scoop up a couple yards of this fabric this week. While it is normally $50/yard, I will be able to get it for $25. To know that I can wipe them off and wash them whenever something spills sounds dreamy! I’ll keep you posted on the progress.

Nice choice! Outdoor fabric should stand up to the kiddos. Joann's has become a regular stop for me.

I am adventuring into outdoor cushions and found the same sale. Now the kiddos want sleeping mats for the fort that is our summer project. I love the idea of indoor cushions with the same cleanup feature! Thanks for a wonderful store of ideas to make life more fun, beautiful and cost effective.

Oooh, I love the texture on these! I've been looking for some simple fabrics with nice texture to revamp the options on my kids' upholstered chairs and these could be perfect!

I used an outdoor fabric on a chair in my office for two reasons…one- the sun that room gets in the afternoon and two-my sweet little Cairn likes to sit there when I'm in the office. It has held up beautifully!

I've used outdoor fabric on my dining chairs several times, but it doesn't repel the stains as well as I'd like. We've got three little monsters and I swear I can't keep up. Do they get ANY food in their mouths?! I've tried spraying them with scotch guard and that doesn't work all that great either. I'm gonna try the laminated cotton fabric next, I think. It's similar to oilcloth, but soft. Here's a link to a blog post explaining the difference between the two. http://oilclothaddict.blogspot.com/2011/06/q-oilcloth-vs-laminated-cotton-vs.html
Their shop has TONS of colors and patterns, if you're interested in checking it out. http://www.etsy.com/shop/oilclothaddict
I've never ordered from them, but the prices are reasonable – less than the outdoor stuff.

I just ordered this fabric from JoAnn's at 60% off. I had contemplated for a long time using drop cloths but worried so much about how they would hold up to daily wear. Thanks for sharing your experience!!!!!
