DIY Medallion Box

August 21, 2014 by Courtney 7 Comments

Hi all! Do you remember when I went to the Haven Conference back in July? That’s where Danielle, Kirsten and I spoke about pulling off high end diy design. I created two different projects for that and I am back today with a $6 medallion box for you to make. SO easy and looks great styled on a shelf. We gave way our DIY projects at the Haven Conference so I made myself another one when I came home. I missed it too much. Here is the easiest project ever. simplediybox The one below is the one I created for the conference. I used two coats of paint and highly recommend that. It will look much more high end. whitediyathoughtfulplace So all you need is a raw wood box from Michaels. At only $5 you can’t go wrong. I ended up using Rustoleum paint instead. I find it drips far less. The other supplies you need are super glue {or wood glue}, gold leaf paint and a wood medallion. I actually bought everything at Michaels. whiteboxsupplies   IMG_0710 While this may seem obvious, I think the key to making the box look high end is removing the hardware. Then you’ll put the pretty gold hinges back on. You will be discarding the gold clasp. IMG_0715 The screws are tiny so a helpful hint is to keep all of the hardware in a bowl nearby. IMG_0721 whtieandgoldmedallion Spray the box with two coats of paint. Let dry 20 minutes in between coats. Use the gold leaf paint on the medallion. I only needed one coat. You can spray paint the medallion with gold paint, but the gold leafing product produces a better result. IMG_0805 Replace hardware when the box is completely dry. whiteboxglue Strong glue is necessary. Remember to only place glue on the top part of the medallion so you can still open the box! That is a major detail you can’t overlook! I know sometimes I start working quickly or my mind wanders while doing projects. Don’t let that detail go! whiteboxbooks   These are great for keeping special things in or for just filling a space on a shelf. I love a great box like this when I am styling bookshelves. And the possibilities with color are endless. To see the Greek key vase I made as my other high DIY project go here! Stop by tomorrow to see some beautiful Friday Eye Candy featuring reader’s bedrooms from Instagram. Can’t wait to show you. Such a cute little makeover. I think it would be a nice alternative to gift box too. Would make the gift seem extra thoughtful- a thoughtful place! 🙂
