Five Ways to Avoid Color Commitment

September 8, 2014 by Courtney 8 Comments

Happy Monday! I hope you all had a great weekend. Today I am talking about color. While I have never shied away from color while decorating my own home, I have many friends and clients who are scared to really go there with color. And while some are frightened to commit, others just want the flexibility to change things up. And to be honest, I am leaning more in that direction as of late. While I adore color and how it makes me feel, I like to change my mind and easily swap out hues with the seasons or just when I desire to do so. Keeping an overall neutral palette and knowing how and when to infuse color can be a powerful decorating tool. Today I am talking about five easy ways to enjoy beautiful splashes of color without making any major commitments. colorcommitmenttag   colorframepaper colorcommitmentframepaper via bhg First up is paper! Whether it be wallpaper, shelf liners, or gorgeous wrapping paper, you can easily make a fun color statement by placing it in oversized frames. You can even build your own frame to create a custom size. This is a great way to go big with color without any major investment or commitment. Framing small doses of big color creates an awesome focal wall. Toss in a couple of coordinating throw pillows or a pretty lamp and you have a great color scheme that can easily be swapped out in the future. This is also great for anyone renting a space.   colorflowers colorcommitmentflowers via ballard designs This is one of my all time favorite ways to make a room shine. A simple, bright bouquet of flowers. Flowers instantly infuse color and create such an inviting space. Don’t be afraid to go with an all neutral space because any flower you bring in will instantly shine. And while there are many inexpensive flowers out there, you can also use faux flowers to create a fun pop of color. This is also an easy item to change as the seasons come and go. colorfabric colorcommitmentquilt via colorcommitmentbed bhg via I featured the living room for Friday eye candy and so many of you pinned that look. When I really examined both of the spaces above I realized just how easy it would be to change the entire look with one shopping trip. Keeping your color just to a couple of pillows and a throw is genius. And do you see how there is a cute throw or piece of fabric drape over the headboard? Also a really easy way to toss around color without a big commitment. colorpillowtalk colorcommitment Photography: Christine Choi Photography via Style Me Pretty colorcommitmentlaurabateman home of laura bateman reif via the every girl Both of these spaces are calling my name. I adore how big of an impact one simple pillow can have. And how fun to be able to splurge on a really great designer pillow here and there when you are only using one or two to create an entire color scheme for you. While we can’t all have white couches, a beige or neutral sofa will still welcome a great floral or print when it comes to a statement pillow. And that bedroom above could welcome in the holidays by swapping the colored beauty out for a fun plaid lumbar pillow.   colorpainton colorcommitmentchairs via While this may seem gutsy at first glance, we are really only talking about a can of paint and an hour or so of seat equity. Inexpensive and completely adorable. Not to mention, after a year or so you could go back to white or even change up the color. Do you have a stool, a chair, a bookcase . . . any piece of furniture that could benefit from a fun splash of color. It’s really not that big of a commitment and can be changed again and again. These chairs have me thinking!!! To get caught up on past installments of The Five Ways series, click below:

These are awesome tips – and I have done exactly this in my home. I get bored easily and knew that I would want to change things up regularly but not have to keep spending a fortune… All our bedrooms are white with pops of colour with throws and cushions! x

Great tips! I have red accents with pillows, pictures, etc. and all neutrals in the rest of the house 🙂 I did this so I can change my accent color in the future when I get bored 🙂

This is so my decorating style. I am definitely a neutral palette girl, but I love adding pops of color and having the flexibility to change things up. Thanks for all the great ideas!
