Hello, my friends. Pardon my absence yesterday but things have gotten crazy over here. We have a bathroom that is out of commission, a broken dishwasher, and a house that is being painted. Needless to say I am about to pull my hair out. For real. But I would look horrible without hair so I am trying to keep it all together. I know these are very small issues in the grand scheme of things! Last week I shared five ways to arrange your bookcases. Today I thought I would tackle another issue that many struggle with: what to do with artwork above a console table, dresser, or buffet. Here are five of my picks. LAYER IT …

Photo: Landon Collis This is one of my favorite ways to decorate over a console table. I love the layered look. I think it allows you to switch things up as well as include various finishes. This always gives a look that is collected over time. Do you see how both examples have something larger in scale on each side? That helps to balance the top of the console table. A stack of books or a bowl of seasonal décor always work well in the middle. Remember to include items that are special or have some significance to you. USE A LARGE MIRROR … bhg.com kristen hutchins via One large mirror can be beautiful. Especially if the console table is in a narrow hallway or dark space. Again you see in the photo above how the flowers and lamp are larger/taller in scale with a stack of something in the middle. This is a great formula for success. KEEP IT SYMMETRICAL … the life and style guild décor pad Another great choice is the use of a symmetrical gallery wall. Consider six special black and white photos or pieces of sheet music from an old music book. By keeping the frames all the same and the mattings white, you can pull of a very clean look.
A statement piece is always a great choice. Maybe it’s a piece of art you have fallen in love with. Maybe it’s a framed piece of fabric. Whatever you choose, don’t be afraid to let it take center stage. {and again we see the taller items on either side}. Another inexpensive way to go is looking for an inexpensive piece of art at GoodWill or a flea market. You can reuse the frame but fill it with an enlarged photo. Remember to think outside the box when creating something on this scale. STACK IT UP … via tobi fairley Last but not least, stack it up! I love art that is stacked vertically. It draws your eye upwards and really creates a grand effect. You can use matching frames or switch them up. I love how Tobi Fairley used a frame that was slightly smaller in scale above a larger one. I hope this helps the next time you buy a new console table, dresser, or buffet. What about you? Have you done something unique above one of your tables? We would all love to hear. And now it’s back to my mess of a house! Wish me luck. Five Ways to Style Bookcases

Love this! We're starting a gallery wall in the living room with all of E's pics from this past year and I think the console will be too small at the point. Need to figure out a solution!!

Love the ideas, particularly the layered look.
Courtney, thinking about your fall decorating I love that you don't collect a lot of stuff that later has to be stored. When you use consumables like coffee beans and paper items and candles wrapped with ribbons I try to copy your ideas. I have a small home and not a lot of storage! Today when shopping I saw a lot of cute items but I walked away and thought of your simple style of seasonal decorating. Thanks!

These are such great ideas! Love a large mirror or a statement piece. You do have a full plate Courtney. Sorry about your dishwasher! Getting the house painted sounds fun but I know that can be be a bit chaotic. Enjoy your afternoon.

This something I hadn't considered before but it really changes the appearance and feel of the space over the console/sideboard. Thank you!

Hi Courtney,
Am about to re-decorate our hallway and want to incorporate a console table – probably glass. Your ideas for styling it are lovely – thanks for the inspiration.

Courtney, Great tips for consoles as I am getting ready to purchase one. My question is what width along a 9 foot floating wall in livingroom. I’m thinking 5-6 feet and perhaps something tall on the floor on each end, there is not enough depth for side chair or I would do that. I’d appreciate feedback.
