We are so enjoying having our Grandma and Grandpa visiting from PA. They arrived on Thursday and will stay with us for a week. Our home lacks a dedicated guest room but my daughter happily gave up her pink palace so that she could sleep in the playroom {every child’s dream, right!}. So I thought I would show you what I do to get a “normal” bedroom ready for guests. 1. A Place to Set Things We have been looking for a dresser for my daughter and I just found this one through Craigslist for . . . $20! That never happens to me. It has fantastic lines. I will decide after the holidays about whether I will paint it or not. Would you? I like my guests to have a place to set their cell phone, drinks, etc. while staying. 2. A Treat Basket I like to pick up a few of my guests favorites to munch on. Add a couple of waters and you are set. I pop in during their stay and replace the water bottles as needed. 3. Fresh Flowers A cup of fresh roses as well as a fresh holiday wreath adds a great scent to the room. I also framed a little sign that reads, “Welcome.” And since it is Christmas time, I couldn’t resist hanging a simple wreath on the wall. 4. Spot to Sit & Fresh Duvet I swapped out Riley’s little table and chairs for a chair from our playroom. It think it’s nice to have a place to sit down and put on shoes or chat while in a room. I also picked up a plain white duvet cover from Ikea for $30. I only pull it out and use it when guests come. It stays fresh and crisp and is less busy than Riley’s striped one. 5. Fresh Flowers in the Bathroom I also add a vase of fresh flowers in the bathroom. 6. Clear the Closet Lastly, I like to clear a good section of the closet and provide empty hangers so the guests can unpack. I simply hang my daughter’s clothes in my son’s closet for the week. ……………… Do you have a special way of making your guests comfortable? You can also check out more tips from an article in House of Fifty on page 10 by Sherry Moeller.

Enjoy your company, the kids must be thrilled to have grandpa and grandma visiting! How nice to have a guest room, in three moves I still didn't manage to get one, but with two twin beds in Max's room and a gueen in Isabella's a little shuffling makes it work! Thanks for the House of Fifty shout out, I loved reading Sherry's tips! Janell

Great tips!! We are hosting my mom and step-dad as well as my sister's family. They have 3 kids, so we're definitely going to be a little tight on space, but I'm going to try to make the house as welcoming as possible. I don't think I can set out a basket of goodies though without the little ones getting into it! 🙂

You're just the best hostess!! I am sure they feel super welcome! I love having fresh flowers and candy by their bed. Nice little touches like that!

You just think of everything!!! Love your tips. And the Craigslist bargain….awesome! Love it when that happens (rare for me, too)!
Our little girls' rooms have similarities. I'm debating about painting her dresser, too. Such a commitment! Can't go back…not easily anyway. Haha. Let's see what others say. I'm thinking about painting hers black (since she has black accents. What to do. What to do.)

If dresser has a nice finish and distinctive grain, I wouldn't paint it.

This is so sweet and thoughtful! I think I really forget that even though they're family that are coming to stay, it's still nice to make them feel loved and welcome! I love that you have a dedicated duvet for guests, that's a great idea!
