Today’s DIY is a painted basket. We are using ours as a waste basket, but the same idea can be applied to any basket. It’s super duper simple and took a total of one hour {including drying time}. It is now at home in my daughter’s room and she is super excited about it. … … I was shopping with my kiddos and they both needed a trash can for their rooms. My son immediately picked out a blue one to match his room but my daughter didn’t care for any of them and asked if we could go to another store to find one. I was exhausted and had no intention of driving around town searching for an orange and pink waste paper basket so it was spray paint to the rescue! And even better, I knew I had all of the colors already on my shelf in the garage! … It doesn’t get any easier than this! I already had a natural basket from HomeGoods and these cans of paint were in our garage. You can choose any combo of colors and can use as many as you want.
- woven basket
- cans of spray paint in the colors of your choice
- painter’s tape
- a dropcloth
NOTE: I had originally planned to use gold for a little glam {I always gravitate towards that darn gold can} but my daughter piped up and said she would rather use white. I think she was 100% correct. Good call on the white. … 1. Tape off your stripes with painter’s tape. I was not worried about it being too tight as the basket is really easy to work with. 2. Spray away! I turned the basket upside down and sprayed the bottom pink. Then I sprayed the orange. Once that dried, I flipped it right side up and sprayed it one more time. 3. Once that was dry, I removed the tape and taped off the pink and orange stripes so I could spray the white band. And bam. Here she is! I think she looks pretty sassy under my daughter’s desk and she is excited that it matches her room. I am just hoping she will actually empty the darn thing once in a while. I have never seen so many little pieces of paper in one basket. What is it about kids loving to cut tiny pieces of paper?! … By taping off the pink and orange sections to paint the white, you’ll get a few spots that lose the color when you remove the tape. To fix that, I held the colored can of spray paint SUPER close to the basket and gave it a quick squirt. Easy. You’ll definitely need to spray each section right side up and then upside own because of the angles of the woven basket. Lastly, keep it outdoors or somewhere well ventilated until the yummy spray paint odor goes away! And there she is in all her glory. Cheap and easy and custom for the space. And I noticed there are some new readers around here. Welcome!! If you missed any posts on my daughter’s room you can click below. enjoy your day

So cute! You know, if you sprayed the middle of the basket white (no tape) first, then you would only have to tape it off once (over the white stripe). I may have to try this!

Love it! I need to do this around my house. I have so many baskets that are in great shape but aren't the right color to use anymore. Looks like I need to buy some spray paint! Thanks for the great idea 🙂

So cute! I really like the white she chose too.
And my kids are huge into those tiny scraps of paper. If I don't find them first, my dogs do and eat them. Ugh.
