Options for Making Striped Drapes

July 12, 2012 by Courtney 18 Comments

It’s no secret that I LOVE me some striped drapes!!! And I know many of you do as well because there are a lot of readers checking out my tutorial on making them. I will be the first to admit that it was a ton of work. A few of you have written me to kindly ask if I could make some for you. I wish I had the time or back to withstand making them again! So I am always on the hunt for fun ways to add stripes on a budget. Here are stripes in a few of my favorite inspiration rooms:

Traditional Bedroom design by Los Angeles Photographer Erika Bierman Photography
Eclectic Kids design
Traditional Bedroom design by Richmond Media And Blogs Dear Lillie
…
And then here is my dining room with the striped drapes I made. You can read about them here.
via a thoughtful place
But I am all about jumping in an creating the look for less {either less money or less time!}  if you are up for it.
The first option would be to buy a striped duvet. The upside to that is you have the fabric you need. The length should be decent and the width would give you a rich, full look. Of course you would need to cut the front away from the back and stich up your edges for a clean look. If you are not afraid of a sewing machine this could be a good option. You can pick up a striped duvet here or here.
The other option is using a shower curtain. West Elm and many other places are offering them now. You can pick one up for around $40. Of course shower curtains are short, but you have two choices. You could either buy an extra one and piece them together and a stripe line {no one would ever know} or you could add a solid pop of color to the bottom. You can find a shower curtain here or here.

A third option: would be to buy just one drape from somewhere like Crate and Barrel. If you are brave and can sew, you could cut it across creating to sections of stripes. You could than add it to the bottom of a solid colored drape. Doing that would result in a look similar to the first photo in this post.
…..
Here is a great example of using a shower curtain to create drapes. Natasha from Schue Love added an orange band to the bottom of hers to extend the length. You can read more about that here.

via my girl natasha over at schue love I am not sure I will ever give up my love affair with stripes. I have them in too many of my rooms {whether it be drapes or painted stripes on the wall or on dresses in my closet!}. If you are loving stripes as well, maybe these tips will help you achieve the look for less.

Oh my goodness, I'm totally addicted to stripes as well! Another super easy option is paint. I painted my dining room curtains, and I love them!

I have been in love with your striped drapes ever since I first came across your blog! I recently made some for my son's room by using a plain white Ikea curtain and sewing navy blue stripes onto them. It still required some deal of time and effort but not as much as starting completely from scratch. Needless to say I love them more than I have ever loved a pair of curtains and I get compliments on them all the time!

I love stripes as well and have painted them in a few rooms of my house. Most recently, I made a striped shower curtain by painting the stripes. Check it out on my blog: http://projectsatthepicketts.blogspot.com/2012/07/i-painted-shower-curtain.html?m=1
