Our Kitchen Makeover is Complete!

September 15, 2010 by Courtney 54 Comments

Yay! It’s finally done. We are thrilled with how it turned out. After pouring over a ton of dreamy kitchen pictures, we picked little elements from a few that made the whole look come together (on a much much smaller budget).  It now has the fresh and clean look we were going after. I have to say that we were lucky to inherit the white cabinets and black counter tops when we moved in. Here a couple of before shots (excuse the randomness of the cookie making and the Easter egg dying . . . working on getting better at taking before shots!)
before
before

So we had great basics to start with. But it seemed lacking in personality and charm. Here is a list of what we did:

  • new appliances
  • subway tile backsplash {see inspiration story below}
  • new Moen faucet
  • bin pulls from here
  • under cabinet lighting
  • glass front cabinet doors

When working with a smaller space, remember to stick to design techniques that can trick the eye. We kept the backsplash simple and consistent even behind the cooktop. This makes the counter space look longer. Also, using a reflective back splash causes more light to bounce around the room and ultimately look larger. We chose to do one glass cabinet door on either side of the kitchen to lengthen the look of the kitchen. Lastly, don’t under estimate the power of under cabinet lighting. It really transforms a kitchen and is so much more enjoyable to cook under.

story on the pink towel later . . a mommy tip!

I will forever by grateful to Janell over at Isabella & Max Rooms. When I saw her kitchen remodel, I picked up the phone immediately and ordered the same backsplash from here. The subway tile is classic but the beveled edge provides a terrific reflection of light and adds dimension to the space. I love it! And as she pointed out, Sarah from Sarah’s House used it in her farmhouse! It’s a keeper. Thanks, Janell. Here are some shots from her kitchen. It’s beautiful!

And here is an up close and personal of our backsplash

Beautiful!!! I have white cabinets and black counters and am struggling to take it to the next level and make it pulled together…right now it's very blah. I'm going to be studying your photos over and over as I try to get the details to come together. I would love to know what your paint color is!

Your kitchen is beautiful! Love it all! I have a question about adding the pulls. I want to switch our knobs to pulls as well, but I'm nervous about drilling 2 new holes and what to do with the single one. Did you just leave it hidden by the pull? We have cherry cabinets, so I don't think I could fill it with wood putty and have it match?? I'm just to chicken to drill new holes, but love the classic look of the pulls.

Hi Kristin and Kendall! Gosh . . I wish I could say they are some fancy cabinet . . but they are builder white. I can't find the maker listed on them anywhere. But I do know that if you a cabinet person come out, they will show you sample cards. Even if that are not pricey cabinets, you can get them in warmer whites. Hope that helps. The granite is "absolute black." Have fun with your makeovers!

Hi Courtney, I just found your blog and love your kitchen remodel. Your before photo looks exactly like mine (same exact backsplash, white appliances) and I am just waiting for my oven to die (it is 18 years old!) to replace the counter and put up white subway tile. I just popped over from I Heart Organizing, and I love your kitchen! It looks like you also added moulding to the window above the sink. We have that same type of window, and I would love know how hard it was to frame it out. Did you DIY, or have a contractor do it? Also, how did you do the under cabinet lighting? Is it the pop in kind that you have to turn on individually, or is it hardwired to a light switch? Sorry for so many questions! 🙂 Your kitchen is beautiful! -Jenny

Hi – Beautiful kitchen. As we've been planning our new kitchen both yours and Jannell have been inspiration for me. We are also doing the beveled subway tile, but are thinking about doing it in a herringbone pattern, as the kitchen is 21×9. The 21' wall is where most of the tile will show, and the rest of the wall is all glass cabinets, windows and an open hood. Do you think herringbone pattern along with the detail of the bevel is too much? Thank you much!

You did such a fantastic job on your kitchen. It's quite beautiful, as is the rest of your home. I have a very similar style going in our kitchen. We just bought a small tv and I was wondering how you mounted yours. Is it attached to the backsplash or the bottom of the cabinet? I have purchased a mount that swings/flips the tv down from the cabinet but the rod is too long and I have to figure out something else. Just curious…
    Thanks so much!

How did you pick your shade of white for the cabinets so that it would play nice with the shade of white on the subway tile?
