Painting a Brand New Coffee Table

January 13, 2015 by Courtney 6 Comments

Thank you to all of you who took a moment to comment or email me about yesterday’s post. I feel like so many of us relate to one another and in the end we are always more alike than different. I plan on sharing ore posts like that and appreciate the positive feedback. Today I am switching gears to furniture! So we finally took the plunge after living here for seven years and bought a coffee table. You can see and read about that here. The problem is, I made a huge mistake with the color! It was all kinds of wrong. It was one of those lapses in judgment where you truly wonder if you’re losing it. I happened to be sick as a dog when I ordered it so I am blaming it on that. Mmmkay? Anyhoo. LOVE the table, and LOVE the color. But it matched our sofa exactly and we need contrast in this space. So one night, shortly after having the table, I spent an hour painting and we couldn’t be happier. coffeetableredo coffeetablecream I wish the photos did it justice. Sadly they do not. In real life, the table actually reads a really pretty linen color. Almost a cream and had faint caramel streaks through it. The Vintage Décor Paint I used made this a complete breeze. I literally painted it with the linen paint and after it was dry I used the Vintage Décor wax. A little goes a long way and in rubbing it on the paint, it creates an aged, antiqued look. So what appears to be sanding is actually the wax. coffeetabledetails We were so ready for this table. We play a family game of Clue almost every night here. Last night we had my parents over to watch the championship football game and it was great to gather around this table for a casual dinner while we watched. coffeetabletop coffeetablebooks Here are a few close ups as I think they better represent just how soft and pretty the top came out. coffeetablemancala And if you don’t have Mancala at your house, no matter your age, you may want to order one. It’s such a great game. And I still have yet to beat my daughter. worldmarket_clipped_rev_1 Coffee Table {On sale!} I highly recommend this table. And it happens to be on sale right now for a great price. Just keep in mind it shouldn’t match your sofa! And know that it’s a great candidate to paint with the Vintage Décor Paint {no prep needed . . . honestly my favorite paint ever}. Have a great day, my friends.

I love how it turned out! I have a brand new armoire that we purchased for our bedroom last year that I've been secretly dying to paint. I'm scared to tell my color-blind hubby that I hate the color 🙂 I might have to show him this post!

Looks great, Courtney. When I first saw that you had painted it, I called it whitewashing. Maybe that is a word for my older generation. But then I thought, and from what you described today, that this is the technique they call liming. Is that correct?

The magic of paint! Your table looks pretty Courtney! Perfect for your space. We are a big board game and puzzle family but don't have Mancala. I will have to pick that up….sounds fun!

Love how it turned out. Sometimes we find the perfect piece, but not in the color we desire. It can be a bit daunting to paint a new piece, but also gratifying when it turns out the way yours did. And yes, everyone needs Mancala!!

I love your coffee table. I just saw it featured in Better homes and Garden. What paint did you use to paint the coffee table white. You just said linen. I would love to duplicate your work. Your house is beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
