A little while back, I posted about my son’s big boy room. Although I have thrown a wrench into our normally calm life with our closet makeover, the big boy room is the real focus of 2011. Although I am having a blast planning his room and even giving him choices {he picked out a pillow at HomeGoods this week!}, it’s breaking my heart that my little man will soon be in a “big boy room.” I never thought we would outgrow a crib. He is more “kid” like everyday and has such a passion for life. It’s such a joy to be working on a room for such a happy little client! So a couple of updates: 1. Amazing pillow find at Target. I tried to find one online to show you, but they are not there. They are outdoor pillows we will be using on our front porch. However, when I held one up next to all of the things for our son’s room, I thought it would look perfect in there as well. And because it’s an outdoor pillow, he can toss is around, jump on it, spill on it . . . it won’t matter. I love that. It reminds me a lot of Kirsten’s great family room pillows {of course the outdoor fabric makes it far less plush than Kirsten’s and more suited for our porch and throwing around a toddler’s room!} 2. A new coordinating pillow from HomeGoods {$30} 3. I also added the stripe rug to the mood board {Ikea}. I like the punch it gives the room. Here is a look at the mood board as well as a shot of some of the recent finds. He already has bead board in the room that my hubby did and I will be painting blue above the bead board. As for the paint color, do you like option #1{mood board background}, {#2} stillwater, or {#3} new providence navy? So that’s what we have going on. My son always runs into his room and says, “look! For me! For my big boy room!” Please weigh in on the paint choice if you have a moment. I love hearing your opinions.

All looking great! I have given too much thought to colour choice for the mood board. First thought was still water as I thought it may be a fraction lighter blue than the rug/pillow blue, and with a dark bed thought may be a nice fit when giving a room light and shade in depth. Then I thought "no" it should be the darker blue! Aren't my comments the most redundant you've experienced.. sorry. 🙂

i love the theme for your son's room! i would be very happy to live in marine-themed romm, although i'm a girl and 30 years old 🙂
and i like the first paint option, the one on the mood board, the best.
Natalie says
I love it! I would love to do a similar theme when my son is ready for a big boy room. Especially love the pillows and rug. I like the second blue the best, the slightly darker one!
Jennifer says
I like all the blues but I especially like the new providence one – the room will look amazing. I think my youngest son is going to lose a tooth soon and that's sending me into a tizzy about him growing up.

Oh what a big boy room this is going to be!!! I am loving the pillows and the rug so I can't wait to see it all together.
I'm thinking I like the 2nd paints color??? But the color you have on the mood board looks good to…I don't think you can go wrong here!

LOVE IT!!! I always find it so hard to find inspiration for little boys rooms that aren't too themey. I can't wait to see your final reveal!
Karen@StrictlySimpleStyle says
That's a room that will really grow with him.

I vote for the mood board color, especially if half the wall is beadboard. I think the Navy will really pop and it is such a classic color. I love everything you've picked out.

Oh I know the feeling of turning a baby room into a 'big boy room'. Very bitter sweet!
As far as color. I am torn between the mood board color and paint option #2, but between those two I am leaning more towards the mood board color because seeing all of the ideas/designs put together in the mood board it looks like that color closely matches the rug and the curtains, which [in my opinion], will really make the room flow together.

This is going to look amazing like everything you do!!! I Have to say I am loving #2!!! I can not wait to start on Carsons big boy room!!! The colors in his are navy and yellow very similar to yours 🙂
Cassie @ Primitive & Proper says
ooh it is going to look amazing! love the whole color scheme! and i vote for stillwater- if the furniture is a darker blue, the lighter grayed down blue would look best with that furniture. (in my humble opinion!)
Green Door Girl says
so pretty (if that is okay for a big boy room – LOL), i think i LIke the color on the mood board with what you have, I like all the colors, but I think the one on the mood board looks best, 2nd choice would be new providence.
Lili says
i love your pillow finds!!!
btw, i pick stillwater….
Kirsten Krason says
What!! I can't believe you found that pillow at Target. Wow I've been missing out. Great find!!!!
Jade @ Flip Flops + Pearls Design says
I really like #1. A navy blue will really make a beautiful impact in that room. It will say boy without being to child-like.
Lisa says
Hi Courtney, I'm loving your inspiration board! What a lucky boy! I think you should choose the wall color based on how much light the room gets. I did a navy room for one of my boys and even on a sunny day it was a bit gloomy because of the low natural daylight. I ended up doing ONE wall navy the rest a khaki and that really lightened it up. That pillow is a score!

Love the board. I would love my room like that too i think. ; ) With the wall color–I think the new providence is best—but all are great.

i want to do a mood board… is there a website i can go to for this? love the navy blue you have picked out… the pillow is my favorite!

It is going to be fabulous! I love everything you have so far! I like #2 as far as the paint choices but they are all great colors! Have fun!
Aubrey says
Awww…he sounds so cute! There isn't anything *WORSE* than the day you figure out your little boy isn't so little anymore…
It looks absolutely fabulous, I can't wait to see the end result! I'm pretty sure I like Stillwater a little more, but just because it's so hard to match blues that I like the contrast…but I'm pretty sure its impossible to make an informed decision from pics on the blog! I'm sure you will make it look perfect!

Looks great! I love the stillwater blue… Since you have a lot of navy accents, I like a different blue for the wall color to give more dimension. Our Target does not have those pillow, I wish!
Megan {Honey We're Home} says
I think I like paint option #1 because it is more navy and the others are a little more gray- but I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. I can only imagine the mix of emotions you're going through getting ready for this "big boy" room- is there another BABY in your future?? 🙂
Kristin @ My Uncommon Slice of Suburbia says
Love those pillows!!!
The stilwater is my favorite 🙂

Oh, I love it. Have you seen some of the Restoration Hardware boys rooms? They seem very reminiscent. As for the color I like the first option, but have found I HAVE to buy the little test sample because I tend to go too light, hate it and buy a different color.
Michaela says
I think I'm liking the one on the mood board, too! I can't wait to see it. I know my mom always got emotional when she re-did our baby rooms into big girl/boy rooms! I can't wait to see the finished product. The bed on the mood board is super cool!
Ruthie{Look~Learn~Love} says
I love Stillwater! and that bed is a beautiful choice! Hmm..I wouldn't mind a room with these colors in it for me..
SavvySurfer says
Stillwater would be my choice. 🙂
Traci says
OK, now I have to add a trip to Target to my list. I NEED those outdoor pillows!!! Those color choices are hard. I like them all but I think the background of the mood board is my favorite. Especially with the bead board.
Cassie {Hi Sugarplum!} says
LOL, megan!!! so courtney…what's the answer?!? I love the board you've put together…it's going to be an amazing room! I like the mood board paint as well. At first I was leaning towards something lighter since it's a kids room, but then I remembered you have white beadboard (go mr. courtney!). what color is that target pillow…black or navy?

I like the mood board paint color. I think that it will look fantastic with the bead board and really pop, plus from the look of the mood board it seems to really work.

I am partial to the darker color on the mood board but thats because my sons room has the navy accents. looks like you have it almost all together!
Alicia@ eco friendly homemaking says
Sometimes a navy room will stay dark even when the light comes in so I would go with one of the other colors.
Just A Girl says
I like 2 or 3 for paint.
Will be checking out those pillows ASAP

What a great find at Target! I like either option 1 or 3, but you can't go wrong with any of them. Can't wait to see how everything turns out. I am loving the mix of patterns!

Great pillows lucky girl! I like the lighter blue with your darker accent pieces. This will be fun to watch.

Courtney great minds think alike, take a look at my playroom fabrics that I am working on. I purchased the polka dot curtain from Ikea also. I am doing a room that will be changed out for boys or for when my little gal comes to visit. It is based on navy and white and green. I am going to enjoy seeing what you do for your little guy. I love the direction you are going!!! Kathysue
