Room Makeover: Painting Progress

March 11, 2013 by Courtney 31 Comments

Hi, all! I am popping in quickly to give you an update on the painting progress in my daughter’s room. That is about all I can do as I am 100% exhausted. First and foremost, a huge shout out to Nancy who took the time to email me and give me some pointers on painting a ceiling. I can not tell you how great it was to have a few ideas that really made the process as painless as it could be. I will share them once I get a proper post put together. When I first put the paint up, Ioved it! It was the exact shade I was hoping for. A tangerine with some punch but not too dark. paint But then something it happened. It dried. And boy oh boy was it too dark for me. Two coats of paint on the ceiling and I realized it needed to be lighter. I’ll spare you the choice words I had. Ughh. Honesty, to paint a ceiling all day and realize it wasn’t quite right was a bit crazy.  So I stepped away from it, relaxed on the front porch, had a lovely dinner and went to bed. In the morning I realized I needed to do something to tone it down. I was off to Home Depot to pick a new shade. When I came home and tried it, it was way too peach. Peach is all wrong for the room. Ughh. Are you kidding me. I know had a deep orange ceiling with a patch of peach in the middle. So not cool. Then I overheard my mother in law skyping with the kids and she asked if I was adding white to the original color. What’s this? Add white? Brilliant. So that is exactly what I did. I added white to the leftover original color and fell in love. It went up lighter and dried the color I had so wanted. It only took one more coat of this shade and the ceiling was done! Amen. I spent the rest of Sunday painting the pale pink walls a pretty white {Clear Moon by Behr . . . such a great white}. Riley helped paint the white walls so it took a little longer, but it was a fun mommy daughter moment. Luckily the weather was gorgeous so the windows were wide open with sunshine and a breeze. Here is a little sneak peek of the ceiling and the yummy color. ……………loving the new ceiling tangerinepaint2 tangerine And here is a reminder of the inspiration board I am working from. Pretty darn excited to see that the ceiling color I had envisioned is actually a reality. Now it’s on to working on her new desk area in the closet. Hope you all had a great weekend.

Love how it turned out. Good for you for giving it a go. Now you probably know why I refuse to paint ceilings anymore, LOL. I have in the past and found that my painters are far more efficient (and sometimes cheaper with the mistakes I've made) in the long run. Can't wait to see it come together.

Yes! While it wasn't as messy as I thought it would be, it may have been cheaper to hire!!! 😉

Oh girl I have so been there! I find with color on ceilings it almost always needs to be a shade or 2 lighter than the swatch you choose. Something about the way the color reads on a ceiling – it's like it dries darker there than on the walls – I guess it's just the way the light hits.
Glad you got it all figured out – it looks AMAZING! I'll bet she's so excited!

The ceiling looks fantastic! Great job Courtney! Love the tangerine….very fun and happy. We painted our living room/dining area ceiling a very soft blue. After first try it was way too baby blue so we did the same….added white. You had a very productive weekend and I bet one very excited daughter!!

It's going to be so perfectly gorgeous! That peek of the ceiling alone makes me love it already (c: I'm a big fan of anything in the orange family for some reason (it doesn't seem an obvious choice for favorite colors, right?) and I especially love it paired with pink…those were actually my July wedding colors (c:

So pretty I love the ceiling color. It is so unique to paint the ceiling with a pop of color and leave the walls white, I like it!
