Take 5 Tuesday #5: Repurposing Containers

July 26, 2011 by Courtney 34 Comments

Today’s Take 5 Tuesday is dedicated to the power of a pretty little container! I am all about organization and two things in my daily routine kept bugging me. a pretty way to corral coffee The first is my morning coffee routine. I am not quite awake until I have that first cup of coffee. I had been keeping the coffee and filters on the countertop and they just looked ugly. So I scooped up a darling little planter from Ikea. I am all about repurposing and this lacey little number holds my coffee and filters perfectly. Take a look IMG_2682IMG_2685 sassy soap container The second pretty little container is actually a pencil holder from The Container Store. With a dispenser of soap slipped inside, it is much nicer on the eyes. IMG_2691 Overall, the kitchen is much neater and makes me smile every morning. IMG_2693 wrangling my rings One of my bad habits is that I constantly take off my rings and leave them here and there. I can’t stand wearing jewelry when I am diving into projects. And because most of my days are spent doing some little project, the rings are constantly coming off. And then there is always the mad search for them before we leave the house. It drives my hubby cuh-razeeee!  So I found this sweet little elephant at Home Goods. I really have no idea what it is supposed to be used for, but I have it perched right above my kitchen sink so that I can slip my rings in it while cooking or doing dishes.   IMG_2698 This blue and white dish is actually a soap dish. Home Goods has a super cute line of blue and white bathroom items right now and I knew this would be perfect for the living room. IMG_2700 IMG_2701 What about you? Do you have some cute containers around your house that have been repurposed? I would love to hear about them. It’s amazing how such a tiny tiny change can make your life so much more organized . . . and pretty! ……………………………………………………………………………………. please help me find a rug! In a totally unrelated topic, I need your help. I thought our living room was just about finished. But sadly, I had to return my new zebra rug. Although I am head over heels in love with it, I couldn’t stand the shedding. It was everywhere. I have looked high and low for a similar rug. If you come across one, or already know of one, can you shoot me an email! IMG_2419

Your kitchen could not possibly be any cleaner or more organized. Those are great ideas for adding charm to necessities. That elephant has my name all over it.

So sorry about the rug and it looked so great in your living room. PB teen did have similar ones and maybe they don't shed? Good luck.

Love the container ideas. Everything looks better in a pretty container. The rug is fabulous. When I first got my wool rug, I was told to vacuum it a ton. It shed and shed and shed at first, but after a few months of constant vacuuming, the shedding basically stopped. I have heard that is the case with most nicer wool rugs.

Courtney, I love that green elephant in your black & white kitchen with the hint of pink in the flowers (and hand towel?) Just makes me love the color scheme of your kitchen all the more than you can bring in fun accessories like that!
I have a rug from West Elm that is STILL shedding a year later….so good riddance to the (albeit very cute) zebra rug!

I love your kitchen. The coffee holder planter is a good idea. Incidentally, I need help finding a rug for my foyer too.

I have a PB rub that finally stopped shedding after 6 months. Now if only the dog would stop shedding, I'd be all set!

I did learn that most wool rugs will shed for a while.

I am the queen of containing. I have things all over the house in an attempt to corral the crud. Baskets, metal dishes, wooden trays, etc. Keys, mail, newspaper, random pocket items, jewelry, coupons, toys, etc. I figure if I can't get everyone to stop dropping things on every flat surface, I'll give 'em a place to drop them into. :o)

You living room looks so pretty in that pic….good luck on finding a replacement rug!

Courtney, I know exactly what you mean by shedding rugs. I have a zebra rug from Hobby Lobby in my laundry room and it makes the biggest mess! it drives me nuts! I'll keep my eye out for you when I'm searching for rugs.

What great ideas for keeping things looking pretty and organized in your kitchen! Bummer on the rug. We have a zebra rug from West Elm in the hubs office and it doesn't shed. I think they still sell it- we've had it for like 4 years or something. Hope you find one you love!

I am *devastated* about your new rug! Funny, because it's not actually my rug, right? (c: I'm just sitting here laughing at all of Michelle's comments from this morning, too…she is hilarious!

P.S. and what your post was *really* about…I'm an organizing *freak* so I'm pretty much in love with pretty little containers that will control the *crapola* all over the house!

You don't think the rug would eventually stop shedding, after repeated vacuuming? From what I can see, it looks fab in there!

And I like your little bowls, so cute!!!

Love your lacey little number holding your soap in your beautiful and organized kitchen! I have got to pick up something for my rings. I misplace them all the time. It drives my husband nuts, too. We're on our way out and I'm running all over the house. The elephant is cute! Too bad about the rug. It did look great in your living room. I'm sure the next rug will look fabulous as well! Happy shopping!

Being organized is the best! I recently bought a small dish to put my rings in and it makes it so much easier to find them. Plus, a pretty dish is always a good addition!

How funny Court- I never take my rings off except to go to bed or workout! If I do take them off for a project- I make sure to put them in my closet since I'm too afraid of losing them! I LOVE your new living room- I hope you find a non-shedding rug to replace the zebra one- it looked so great!
