DIY Christmas Tree Skirt

November 10, 2014 by Courtney 15 Comments

Happy Monday! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Ours was jam packed and I can’t believe the week is already starting. Time is flying by. Do you know there are only six more weeks until Christmas? That’s crazy. Last week I showed you the Baby It’s Cold Outside Tree I created for the Michael’s Dream Tree Challenge and today I am doing a quick DIY for the tree skirt I made. This skirt was actually born from necessity. When I was shopping at Michael’s {in October!} the tree skirts had not arrived to the stores yet. What was a girl to do? I wandered the craft aisles and stumbled upon bags of black pom poms. Suddenly a black and white tree skirt was born. I think the entire skirt cost me $10! christmastreeskirt_diy And without exaggeration, this skirt took maybe 20 minutes to make. Could not be easier. Here is a list of the supplies you need: SUPPLIES: 2 bags of pom poms | 1 1/2 yards of white felt | pencil | string | glue gun | scissors treeskirtcompass I recreated the skirt for this DIY using a smaller scale. You can create any size you wish. For my Dream Tree Challenge I made a skirt that was 36” in diameter. To create that in a very easy way, take your felt and fold it in half. Then create a compass by tying a string around your pencil {my dad taught me this when I was little}. The string should measure 18 inches from the center of the fold {where my finger is}. Hold very tightly and create a perfect half circle. Done and done. treeskirthalcircle Follow your half circle pencil line and cut. You will have a perfect felt circle! treeskirtdiy While still folded in half, fold again to create almost a triangle. Cut out an arc shape so that you have an opening for your tree. This opening size will depend on the trunk of your tree! treeskirt Cut a slit so that you can easily wrap the skirt around your tree. This allows you to put the skirt on after the tree is up. Because this is made from felt, there are no frayed edges to worry about like you would have with other fabrics. treeskirtpoms Last but not least, crank up the Christmas tunes and start gluing! This only took about 10-15 minutes. Add a few inches of glue and place the poms down. Repeat along the outer edge until you are done! dreamtreecombo In the end, I was pretty happy I couldn’t find a tree skirt! This allowed me to easily make one and keep within my black and white color scheme. Inexpensive and easy to make. My kind of DIY these days! To see the rest of my tree you can check it out here. It’s from under my tree!}

    I adore your pom pom tree skirt! You'll laugh….I don't have a tree skirt. I've always used a white sheet. I love tree skirts but the ones I've liked have been super expensive. I am headed to the fabric store later this week for white felt and pom poms. You have inspired me!!

    This post couldn't come in a more opportune time. Every year I remember to get a skirt when the tree is up and decorated. 🙂 I'm terrible about it. This post was a perfect reminder of my tree skirt problem, I believe this will be a perfect solution as I have a lot of fabric around the house this year. I love the idea with pom poms, super cute.

    So so cute! Love the idea of using felt…so many options that way! I hope your individual poms hold up better than my pom pom trim last year though…it didn't even make it to the end of the season! 🙁 boo

    Love this idea! I used felt years ago and it's held up really, but now you have me thinking I DEFINITELY need to add some pom poms 🙂
