Gone With the Closet Door

June 14, 2012 by Courtney 20 Comments

We have a walk in closet so I am definitely not complaining. We organized the space a while back and for the most part is has functioned really well for us. Except for one MAJOR design flaw. The door! Honestly, I would do away with many doors if I had a place to store them all. And for those of you who have stuck around this blog for a while, you may recall I ditched the doors in my son’s closet as well! You can read about it here. The reason the door in my closet was killing me was because it opened in onto my side. It basically covered a good third of the closet when open. I finally convinced the hubby that it needed to go and in its place we could hang drapes. ……………………………..….peek into the closet IMG_9988 This was one of the best things we have done for this closet. I LOVE IT. No more scooting around the door or having it hit me you know where when someone else opened while I was inside. I chose drapes from Target that were the same on both sides. I want it to look just as nice inside the closet as out. I also chose a fabric that drapes really nicely without wrinkles and with little effort to close or open. ………………………………….. No More Door! IMG_9912 writing The little holders to keep the drapes open I scooped up at Hobby Lobby. It was my first time ever going in that store as one finally opened around here. Oh, my! Sensory overload and very excited to go back and take my time up and down those aisles. Might be dangerous. But back to the drapes. We rarely close them and choose to have them open. IMG_9945 IMG_9947 We also switched out the horrible builder grade, non-flattering light for a really cute chandelier. This little closet of ours actually feels more like a boutique now. I so wanted to show you the whole thing by my photography skills are sorely lacking when it comes to snapping such a small space. Advice, anyone? Do I need a wide angle lens? Here is another cute little number I picked up at Hobby Lobby. It sits on the dresser in the closet for either my watch or earrings. IMG_9961 Once again, I am thrilled that we decided to ditch another door in this house! Anyone else on a door ditching kick? Hope you’re all having a great week. We are still in school through next Thursday so very busy with end of the year activities! Looking so forward to summer.

What a brilliant idea! I bet it really opens up the space. Love those drapes and your closet accessories look beautiful. How fun that you feel like you are at a boutique in your own closet!

yes, I was going to say it's like a boutique! a wide angle lens (less than 50mm) would definitely help with small spaces.

That is a great solution, and it looks gorgeous!!! You've got my wheels spinning and I just might need to do the same to ours 🙂

What a great idea – and to have a closet that feels like a boutique must be dreamy. Yes, Hobby Lobby can get you going in many directions. Your photos look great to me, but I totally know what you mean about small spaces.

Great idea! Another annoying thing about doors, especially with closets, is they get scuffed up. Whenever I bring a belt in or hangers, that's always on my mind. What a joy this would be! 🙂

I'm a door ditcher too! 🙂 I removed the one in our master closet and the one in my sons' shared bedroom last summer. Theirs is working perfectly with a cute curtain from Target, but I haven't hung a curtain yet in the master. I'm planning to do somthing simliar to what you did. Did you remove the latch plate and hinges? I'm not sure if I want to fill in and repaint those areas or leave it as-is and try to hide it with the curtain. I'm thinking about doing the same thing with my pantry door too. 🙂

Oh, I also wanted to add that I've resorted to using my iPhone to take pictures that need a wide angle lens. The certainly don't look professional, but at least the whole area is captured. Some real estate agents have these funky little cameras that take whole room pictures (very wide angle). I have no idea how much those cost, but maybe if you have a friend in real estate, you could borrow one.

Can you show us how you hung the drapes from the inside? Can you also show us the contents of the closet. I like the fabric you picked. Jenny Meier http://www.jennymeierevents.blogspot.com

Hi Jenny. There is no email attached to your comment. I simply hung an inexpensive rod above the door on the inside. Nothing special. The contents can be seen her https://athoughtfulplaceblog.com/2010/10/master-bedroom-closet-makeover.html Hope that helps!

It looks fantastic Courtney! Great curtains, too! I also spy a beautiful pair of shoes there…pointy toes with bows. Love them! Maybe Hobby Lobby will eventually work their way up here. I see people find great treasures there.

What a great idea! I love the way it looks too! I hope you show us your chandelier too! I have been wanting to change out our light as well. Builder grade lights are not so fun, especially in a pretty closet!

I totally understand about the closet door. Luckily, our door opens into the bathroom and the builder was nice enough to include just enough room for it to open all the way against the wall. The previous owners put a full length mirror on the door and I'm embarrassed to say that it took me at least a week to realize that it was a door and not a wall! 😉 It would be completely frustrating if the door opened into the closet, like yours does/did. I love the curtains!

I have such a small bedroom…this would be a great solution to the closet. I'm so glad you have enough space to make yours look like a boutique. The whole area is really nice!

It looks great! Don't you just love Hobby Lobby? I go in there at least once a week. If you have a smart phone you can bring up the weekly coupon on hobbylobby.com on your phone and show it to the cashier. They will honor it on your phone! Its almost always 40% off of any regularly priced item. Have fun!

It must be so awesome to have that freedom of not opening and closing the door all the time! The holdbacks look beautiful.
