Master Closet Additions

June 22, 2011 by Courtney 23 Comments

A while back we did a closet makeover which you can read about here. We basically went from a disaster to pretty well organized. It has stayed that way and we have been really happy with how it has been functioning. The only thing that was really bothering me was the area where I hang my dresses. It isn’t a large closet {sadly!} so my dress space is limited. I found that that they were getting cramped as well as dusty. Am I the only one in America that has a dust issue in the closet? We vacuum all of the time and yet dust still finds it’s way to the top of my dresses. Super annoying. So I set out to fix the situation. Here is a quick look at our closet.

So it was this dress section above that was driving me bananas. The dust was one factor and the fact that I had bought a couple {maybe a few} more frocks wasn’t helping either.
So I pulled all of the dresses out and tossed them on the bed. I wanted to make sure I was really wearing everything and purge whatever I had grown tired of or was no longer in style {although I have learned that if you keep it 15 years it’s eventually back in style!}.

Then I picked up one pack of these skinny hangers from HomeGoods {$10). I like them for dresses or tanks. They are quite flimsy in my opinion . . . but maybe that is because I am used to the wooden ones. I love that I can hang more dresses, though!!!! I also added these covers to keep the dust at bay. I like that they only cover the shoulders so I can still see what I have. I found that if I put them in dress bags I end up never wearing them because I can’t see what I have. {would be nice to paint that ugly brown rod, wouldn’t it?} And as you can see, I was a couple hangers short! Darn it!

We had an empty wall after re-organizing or master closet.  I pulled in this white little number that had been in our downstairs mini-mudroom. It no longer had a home and fit perfectly right here {from Target}.

I like that it can hold some of my favorite heels. It also hosts some of the hubby’s t-shirts and a couple of my summer scarves.

Recently, while going through my kitchen cabinets, I realized that we could host all of Southern California with the amount of margarita glasses we own. So silly. Especially, because when we do have a margarita, we NEVER use these glasses. I had planned to pass them along when it occurred to me that they would be great for some of my everyday costume jewelry.

In keeping with the black and white color scheme of the closet I tied a bow on each and now have my favorite bracelets and cocktail rings ready to go.

I always judge a space I have organized by how well it holds up over time. So far so good. The closet has been functioning great. And the “prettier” I try to make it, the more I am encouraged to keep it neat and tidy. What about you? Have you added any simple hints to a space lately? Has your closet gone through a transformation lately?

No, you are not the only one! We have a terrible dust issue in our closet as well. It's all over my dresses and some of our shoes. I love your solution…never thought of that!

Ohh…if I judged my space by how well it holds up over time, I'd be a complete failure. My husband and kids CANNOT keep a space organized after I do it. We gotta work on this. 🙂

Love all that you did, of course!

Looks great Courtney! We started organizing ours a few weeks back. I still need to add a few things. But, I did switch my things to the huggable hangers and it creates so much more space. And, my tops aren't always slipping off the hangers. Since hubby's things are larger and heavier we used all wooden hangers on his side. Love all the little details you've added.

Courtney, I agree with you in respect to making something look fabulous and the higher chance of you maintaining it that way. That truly works for me! I call it functional and fabulous; when these 2 requirements are met I keep the organization up. Your closet looks terrific.

My closet goals are to switch the knobs on our drawers to something a little more fun, and maybe a chandelier if I can convince Josh… Looks great darling!

totally trying to get my closet to also double as my craft space recently. That daughter of mine who neesd a room took my craft space! It's tough to make it visually pleasing yet effectively storing all my crafting supplies!

What a great way to squeeze out more space in your closet! And it just looks so nice. Is staying organized easier since you redid your closet??

It looks great! And totally functional, too! I love the pretty glasses tied with bows. I have the same margarita glass (except it's blue) sitting on my dresser. It currently has some flowers in it, but jewelry would be fun once they die! (: I agree- the prettier it is, the more likely I am to keep it looking that way!

It looks fabulous! We have a dust issue too in our closet — it annoys me to no end! Love the idea of just the shoulder protectors. And I'm all in favor of incorporating margarita glasses whenever you can!

love the shoulder cover garment bags too! where did you get them? (we have a terribly dusty closet too – in fact our whole upstairs is, think it might because the dryer is upstairs.)

Courtney love your closet makeover!! I am in the midst of cleaning mine out right now. I am finally putting in my summer clothes and packing up my winter things. Summer took forever to get here. I am going slowly but surely. Washing everything so it will be fresh and crisp. I am realizing I might have a few too many white pants. How many is too many anyhow? Happy weekend, Kathysue
