I remember lamenting at the onset of Christmas break that nobody was sleeping in. Boy have things changed. We have a house full of sleepy heads ( including myself) and it will be very interesting trying to get everyone out the door on Monday. Here’s hoping our alarms actually work. We are focussed on savoring our last couple days of break and my daughter is hosting a few of her classmates tonight so she is in full party planning mode. Wonder where she gets that from?!
In style news, sales are still in full swing and the Nordstrom Half-Yearly sale is going strong for the rest of the weekend. I also wanted to share my Top 7 Style Picks from the year. These are pieces I wear all the time. Like daily! We all have them. The pieces that we don’t even hang back up in their correct spot but toss on the floor or hang in a “I’ll wear this tomorrow” spot of our closet. So without further ado, here are my 7 Style Picks and items I think every closet should have.
Number One: A Stylish Layering Tank
handbag | tank | white jeans | similar necklace (sale)
My number one might be this $20 tank from Free People. I love the high neck and the flattering cut. In fact I wore my gray one last night under a sweater when we went over to our neighbors. It’s just a great tank and I think a good staple for any wardrobe. It’s darling under cardigans or this jean jacket.
Number Two: Comfortable Leggings!
leggings | similar bag | similar plaid shirt | similar vest | similar boots
Not sure these need any explanation. I know not everyone is on board with leggings but I really do live in mine. I think they you can dress them up or down and they are so darn comfortable for running errands, running carpool or even for date nights. I have lived in this pair but no matter which ones you choose, if you add some pattern and a pair of boots ($51.60) or cute booties you can’t go wrong. Mine are the gray beluga color (read more olive in real life than on website). Found these booties for a great price, too.
Number Three: Turtleneck Dress
dress | similar jacket | leopard heels | wedges | handbag | sunglasses
This dress hands down one of my top picks of 2015. I love this dress and wear it all the time. It’s been really cute with tights and boots for colder days, too. It comes in four colors and you can’t go wrong with it. The material is so soft and it’s a great cut for pretty much all body types. I can’t say enough great things about this dress. It’s a keeper and a year round piece for me.
These leopard wedges are now only $35. Order 1/2 size down. They run big.
Number Four: Distressed Jeans
jeans | flats | similar bag
This outfit was one that my readers picked as a favorite. I have worn these jeans more times than I can count. Distressed denim isn’t always done right. I think there is a fine line between them looking too beat up and just the right amount of fray. I think that is why I love these so much. They don’t push it with regards to looking too distressed but still give that edge which creates the nice contrast with preppy pieces. I wear them with heels, boots, booties, flats, and flip flops. Highly recommend.
Number Five: Jean Jacket
denim jacket | tee ($9) | leggings | similar converse | sunglasses | necklace
While this particular jean jacket is a newer addition to my wardrobe you can see my old standby below. I love the mixed media jacket because of the comfort factor. It’s so soft and looks great over dresses, too. I always like when you can create a more casual look with a dress and this jacket does just that.
Number Six: Comfy Black Dress
similar black dress | jean jacket | striped bag | pendant necklace
I’m sure you all were tired of seeing this dress because I wore it non stop and still do. In fact I wore it with the jean jacket in number six on Christmas day. I LOVE this dress. This particular one is no longer available but this one is almost identical. And may even be a better choice with the higher neckline. I travel in this dress and wear it pretty much whenever I can. You can wear a dress like this with heels or flats or even a comfy sneaker. I think every wardrobe needs a soft, comfortable black dress.
Number Seven: White Sweater
white sweater ($29.90) | denim
This was another recent score that I have been living in. I adore this sweater. It has just enough detail and is very soft. But no matter what white sweater you roll with, it’s a good choice. This one is a cute option and also on sale. They are classic and timeless and go with everything. I even wore this one with my gold sequin leggings recently. And yep, there are my distressed jeans again. A winter white sweater is a safe and stylish bet.
And that rounds out my Top 7 Style Picks. I wear them pretty much year round and they are all pieces that can be mix and matched, dressed up or down. Let me know if you have any of these in your wardrobe and find them to be staples, too?!

And a sneak peek of a favorite vest that is coming to the blog. It is finally available online and it’s the softest shearling vest ever.
softest vest EVER! (I bought a small)
Enjoy the rest of your weekend and to all of those with school aged children going back on Monday, good luck with the transition. I used to teach fifth grade and I was just telling my husband that the day after winter break was the most well behaved day of the year because the poor children were all so tired. Here’s to getting some good rest over the weekend and hitting the ground running on Monday.

Love your fashion sense Courtney. Put together and polished. I like that you pick pieces that are “in” yet keep it tasteful. As you mentioned, some of the distressed jeans are a bit much, or should I say too revealing no matter your age. I mentioned to Megan, that while I don’t want to dress like my mother, I also don’t think it appropriate to dress like my 20 something daughters either at my age (47).

You’re so sweet. Thank you, Lauren. I appreciate that so much. I totally agree that it’s a fine line of dressing with current trends but not looking like a teenager.
I hope you’re having a wonderful weekend. Just can’t believe my kiddos go back to school soon. I have gotten pretty used to them being around and I am not ready for them to go back.
Happy Saturday, my friend.

As you know Courtney, I love your style. Classic, preppy, feminine and fun with a little bit of an edge. You are always put together as Lauren said and you beautifully accessorize. I also love that you incorporate quite a few mix and match pieces. I have a gift card to use and adore that vest! Me being a pest again….what size did you get in that? I also might pick up that white sweater. Love the detail on that. Enjoy the weekend friend! So so cute that your daughter is party planning.

Allison! That’s the nicest compliment. Thank you so so much. Thank you for always being so sweet and supportive. You will love that vest. It’s so so soft. I bought a small. Hope that helps. I should have typed that so I added it to the post. Thanks for asking. Enjoy the weekend, Allison. xo

You have a great sense of style! Would you ever post a “wardrobe planning” strategy – my wardrobe needs an overhaul for sure. I guess I mean, how many of each pieces would you suggest? What would you buy first? Etc.
Thanks – btw – I am not young, early 50s but I need help!
