This 24 hour makeover is near and dear to my heart. When we moved into our home, over 2 1/2 years ago, my husband’s office became the catch all. While it had a desk, it also had furniture we didn’t know what to do with and all of my craft supplies. Despite it being pretty rough, he never complained and has always been up for all of my crazy projects. So when he left town on a hockey trip, I decided it was time to give him the space he deserved. This secret makeover was a crazy 24 hours, but undoubtedly one of my favorite projects to date. Come on in!
Welcome. I didn’t take any before photos or process pictures. I just really wanted to throw myself into this and make it special for him. Plus time was ticking and it was a whirlwind. What was once an empty room full of craft supplies and mismatched furniture is now a warm and welcoming space in which to work.
This is a sofa we had in our basement. If you have been following along, you know we just underwent a huge demo down there and moved out the furniture. We will be going with a sectional in the basement so this needed a home. It couldn’t be more perfect for the office. We love this sofa (comfortable and pretty). I shopped the house for as much as I could and then drove to every store in town. I also ordered a couple of things from Amazon that would be delivered the next day.
The olive tree was also in the basement and worked out well in here. The white shelving unit has been with us for years and years. Does anyone remember the rainbow books? This is where I had thrown all of my craft supplies so I spent a couple of hours sorting and donating. I narrowed it down to one plastic bin which I am not keeping elsewhere. While I would have loved to do a more masculine bookcase, I am all about using what we have. And you can’t beat the storage on this piece.
A flashback to our teen zone and the rainbow bookcase my daughter did. This was a fun room (all the details here).
Homegoods came through with these black file bins and boxes. And I picked up the black storage cubes from Target. The lamp is also a Target find. It was fun shopping for more masculine items. I knew I wanted to keep the color palette very minimal. Nothing too busy or colorful.
Ryan and my son made this desk years ago during the One Room Challenge so it holds sentimental value. And it looks great with the sofa which worked out well. Full bedroom reveal here.
We went to Paris before trying to start our family. I’ll never forget propping up our camera on Ryan’s backpack and hoping for the best with this picture (frame). To this day, it’s one of my favorites and a nice reminder of where it all started. We had a picnic every night so we could afford to buy ourselves a nice dinner on the last night.
I am so thankful I hung onto these custom drapery panels (fabric here). We brought them from California and used them in the guest room for a bit before they made their way here. This Amazon rod is my go to (very inexpensive). The coffee table was a huge score. It was the last one on the floor at Kirkland’s. It was exactly what I was picturing so quite the lucky find. I quickly loaded it in my car and was off to the next spot. This one has a similar feel and I love the shape of it.
This tack hammer belonged to Ryan’s grandfather and is so special to him. I picked up the coasters here.
HomeGoods also came through with frames. These are quite similar. I downloaded artwork off of Etsy and had it printed at my local Staples. For spacing purposes, my trick is to use the level in between each frame.
The sconces are an Amazon find and I love them. They are really good in person and I like the oatmeal colored shades. They are not hardwired and use rechargeable lights. This is the perfect spot for something like this because they are more for decoration and to add interest to the wall. Although I am pleasantly surprised with the warm, pretty light they have when turned on. But please note that wireless sconces are accent and mood lighting – not task lighting.
I did order a rug for the space but ultimately decided this room is better off without one. It read too busy which is last thing I wanted for his work space.

Needless to say Ryan was completely shocked. I don’t think I sat down all weekend and it was well worth it. He is so deserving and it felt nice to do something for him without him having to do any of the work. And now it looks like an office instead of a catch all. Long overdue. And I hope this inspires you to tackle a neglecting spot in your own home. So much is possible in just 24 hours.
*I did have Ryan help hang the drapery panels. That is one thing I don’t trust myself with. I need more practice!

Obsessed! It turned out so good! I think sometimes whirlwind projects are the best because we don’t have time to overthink every single decision. 😉
Courtney says
Thank you, Laurie. And you are so spot on!!! As soon as I saw something that could work I grabbed it and was on to the next thing. I really do think it can work in our favor to have less time!
Terry says
Wow! I mean really nice! Love the sofa and coffee table.
Courtney says
Thank you so much, Terry. I really appreciate it.

I love everything, the couch, coffee table, but especially the hammer;) Sometimes we spend more time thinking about doing something than it actually takes to do it, Thanks for the encouragement!
Courtney says
Thank you. That hammer is so special to him. And that is EXACTLY what I told my husband. I had spent many days in there trying to figure out what to do. But just getting up and doing it took less time 😉

I love it! It turned out so so nice. I would love to do something similar for my husband’s “office” (aka a corner in the basement). I may have to take this on this spring! And the wireless sconces would be perfect for my living room. And I love the gallery wall.
Courtney says
Do it, Nicole! After putting this off for so long, I am so happy I finally jumped in. Your husband will love it.
Kim says
Looks so good! What a sweet suprise for your hubby. Did you paint the dark blue shiplap wall or remove it?
Courtney says
Thank you! I think you are thinking of the shiplap in our teen room? That was our previous home.
Christen says
What an amazing space and such a treat for your husband! Your spaces are magical – such a talent you have!
Courtney says
You’re so kind, Christen. Thank you. It was so much fun to work on knowing he would be surprised!
